The VVCplus Control System in the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series works differently from basic voltage/frequency ratio methods.
Instead of simple V/F control, these units continuously monitor motor current and calculate voltage requirements plus slip compensation through an internal motor model. The system splits current into magnetizing and torque-producing components, which helps with faster load change response. Power coverage spans quite a range - starting at 0.75 kW for smaller applications and scaling up to 400 kW for heavy industrial use. Two main voltage classes are available: 200-240V three-phase and 380-500V three-phase, both running on 50/60 Hz supply. Output frequency typically ranges from 0.5 Hz up to 132 Hz, though some models can extend to 1000 Hz when needed. Torque performance varies depending on how the drive gets configured. High overload mode delivers 160% rated torque for one minute, which works for both constant torque and variable torque applications. Normal mode drops this to 110% but allows oversized motors to run at constant 100% torque without derating issues. This setup works well for pump and fan applications that don't need heavy starting torque. Enclosure options include IP20, IP54, and NEMA 1 ratings. Compact units from 0.75-37 kW come in these various protection levels, while larger bookstyle units from 45-400 kW typically ship as IP00, IP20, or IP54. Built-in RFI filtering meets EN55011 standards - Class 1B for 20-meter screened motor cables and Class 1A for 150-meter runs.
