The VLT 5004 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. It is an AC drive that modulates the output frequency supplied to an induction motor so plant controllers can regulate shaft speed, torque, and process throughput without mechanical throttling. Designed for industrial automation, the unit connects directly to standard three-phase mains and provides control terminals for closed-loop or open-loop operation. This configuration makes it suitable for conveyors, pumps, and fan systems that require precise electrical speed regulation.
Speed regulation accuracy is supported by a frequency resolution of ±0.003 Hz, allowing the drive to issue fine increments that help keep motor slip minimal. In closed-loop mode, the controller spans a ratio of 1:1000, so feedback devices can maintain slow creep speeds as reliably as full production rates. When fast acceleration is required, the converter can deliver 180% of rated torque for 0.5 seconds, while a starting reserve of 160% for one minute supports heavy loads until steady-state operation is reached. Command changes propagate quickly because the internal vector processor has a response time of 3 ms. Electrical efficiency is supported by a true displacement power factor of 0.90. The input section tolerates a supply imbalance of up to ±2.0%, allowing operation with uneven mains phases in plant switchboards.
Power terminals accept conductors with cross-sectional areas of up to 4 mm², supporting connections for typical medium-frame motors. Shielded motor cables may run up to 150 m without exceeding the applicable switching limits. Brake, serial communication, and load-sharing circuits require shorter cable runs. The unit has a maximum short-circuit rating of 100,000 A, permitting installation on feeders protected by suitable high-capacity fuses. Shielded brake cables can extend up to 20 m, while load-sharing connections may reach 25 m. These permitted cable lengths provide flexibility when the converter and related equipment are installed in distributed control panels.
