The 178B4789 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss and belongs to the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. It converts fixed-frequency mains power into variable output voltage and frequency so that induction motors can be started smoothly, accelerated, and maintained at commanded speeds. In automated process equipment, the converter replaces mechanical dampers and gear changes, offering electronic control of torque and flow while requiring minimal panel space.
Incoming power is accepted from a 380–500 V three-phase supply, allowing direct connection to common industrial networks without transformers. For variable-torque loads, the drive is rated to deliver 75 kW when operated at 110% overload, while constant-torque applications up to 55 kW are supported at 160% overload for short intervals. The electronics reside inside a compact IP20 housing, which provides protection against accidental contact when the unit is mounted inside a ventilated cabinet. Its narrow enclosure also helps the converter fit within tightly arranged motor control center sections. To minimize conducted and radiated emissions, the built-in line filter meets Class A1 and Class B filter limits, simplifying electromagnetic compatibility compliance on mixed-voltage production lines.
Control is handled by a process control card that provides analog reference inputs and basic PID regulation without requiring external modules. Operational feedback can be viewed on the front-mounted interface because a supplied display provides access to operating values and settings. All printed circuit assemblies use non-coated boards, making them suitable for installation in clean electrical rooms while preserving airflow around their components. Communication over standardized networks is not included because the converter has no fieldbus option. Remote commands must therefore be wired through discrete input and output connections or analog signals. The standard configuration does not include additional application options, leaving the available control functions centered on the installed process card and hardwired interfaces.
