Danfoss manufactures the 176F0550 as a member of the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Classified as a VLT 5000 product, the unit modulates the speed of three-phase induction motors so process lines can respond to variable production demands while keeping energy use under control. In an automation panel, it accepts control references from upstream PLCs and adjusts the output frequency accordingly. This operation provides closed-loop torque regulation for material-handling, pumping, and fan applications.
The unit is delivered with a process control card, enabling proportional speed commands and feedback scaling without an additional option module. The power section is designed for a 380–500 V three-phase supply, so the converter connects directly to common industrial power systems within that voltage range. Under constant-torque duty, it provides up to 22 kW of output power. Variable-torque applications are rated at 18.5 kW when 160% torque is required. The housing uses a compact NEMA 1 enclosure, providing a vented design suitable for clean indoor electrical rooms. Adequate surrounding airflow is necessary because the enclosure allows internally generated heat to escape through its ventilation openings.
A supplied display on the front panel shows output frequency, operating status, and parameter values, allowing local inspection without external diagnostic equipment. The unit uses non-coated circuit boards, which support heat dissipation but require an installation environment free from corrosive vapors and excessive contamination. Communication is limited by the lack of a fieldbus option, leaving the drive to accept analog signals, digital inputs, or relay-based commands. The internal configuration is standard and does not include specialized application hardware. Radio-frequency interference suppression is not integrated, so external filtering may be necessary in installations with sensitive electrical equipment. Proper separation of power and control wiring can also help reduce conducted or radiated interference within the enclosure.
