Product Description:
The 178B0590 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss as part of the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Designed for cabinet installation, it transforms fixed mains power into a variable-frequency, variable-voltage output that allows controllers to fine-tune the speed of centrifugal pumps, fans, and material-handling drives. In typical plant operation, it can replace throttling valves or mechanical gear changes by providing electronic torque control. This approach helps lower energy consumption, minimize wear on belts and couplings, and maintain consistent process variables across a broad load range.
Its power section accepts a 380–500 V three-phase mains supply and can deliver up to 5.5 kW when the application requires 110% continuous torque. The compact book-style IP20 enclosure supports high-density cabinet mounting while providing protection against accidental finger contact with internal components. Control is executed through a process control card that produces a proportional frequency set point suitable for closed-loop flow or pressure regulation. The converter can adjust motor output in response to process feedback, helping connected equipment maintain the requested operating condition as demand changes. Reliability is enhanced by coated circuit boards, which shield circuit traces from moisture, conductive dust, and airborne chemical residue commonly encountered in industrial environments.
For intermittent overloads of up to 160% torque, the inverter supplies 3.7 kW to accommodate startup surges or rapid speed changes without exceeding thermal limits. Electromagnetic emissions are kept within industrial limits by the integrated Class A1 and Class B filter, which reduces conducted interference entering connected supply circuits. Network integration remains optional because the model is delivered with no fieldbus option. The drive has a standard hardware configuration and includes an operator display for viewing operating values and adjusting available parameters. No application option is built into the unit, leaving the installed control and input/output arrangement in its baseline form.
