The VLT 5042 frequency converter is built by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Designed for three-phase induction motors, the unit transforms fixed-frequency mains power into a variable output that allows speed, torque, and process flow to be matched to real-time production demands. In automated lines, this product controls conveyors, pumps, or mixers without mechanical throttling, reduces energy consumption, and supports the coordinated operation of multiple drives through its integrated control terminals and fieldbus compatibility.
Acceleration torque reaches 100% of the rated value, while a starting torque of 180% for 0.5 seconds allows loaded machines to overcome static friction immediately. Closed-loop precision is supported by an output frequency resolution of ±0.003 Hz, allowing precise speed adjustments. The drive processes setpoint changes within 3 ms, so upstream controllers experience little phase lag. Electrical efficiency is supported by a true power factor of 0.90, which limits reactive current in the supply conductors. Full-load operation is permitted at temperatures as low as 0 °C, while reduced-load service is permitted down to −10 °C. These operating characteristics support responsive control in medium-power applications that require stable motor speed under changing loads.
The converter can be mounted up to 1000 m above sea level without derating. Motor wiring may extend to 150 m when screened and up to 300 m when unscreened, providing flexibility for motors installed at a distance from the drive. The load-sharing link can span 25 m, while the brake connection can extend to 20 m. Control and serial-signal conductors support a maximum cross-sectional area of 1.5 mm², matching the capacity of their shield clamps. A short-circuit withstand rating of 100,000 A allows the converter to operate on high-capacity supply feeders when properly protected. The rated motor frequency of 50/60 Hz supports motors designed for common industrial power systems.
