The 178B1160 is a frequency converter produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. The unit converts fixed three-phase mains power into a variable-frequency output that controls the speed and torque of induction motors used in pumps, fans, and other continuous-process equipment. Its integrated power electronics and control logic allow motor operation to follow changing load requirements. This capability can reduce unnecessary energy consumption while maintaining stable flow, pressure, or other process variables. A local operator interface provides direct access to operating settings and drive status from the front of the housing.
The converter accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply, allowing direct connection to common industrial power systems without an external transformer. Under light-duty conditions, the drive supplies 22 kW and tolerates 110% torque for short periods. In heavy-duty service, it provides 18.5 kW at 160% torque for applications with frequent acceleration or demanding load changes. The Compact IP54 enclosure prevents harmful dust ingress and resists water splashes from any direction. Conducted electromagnetic noise is reduced by an integrated Class A1 and B EMC filter, helping the installation comply with industrial electromagnetic compatibility limits. These operating modes allow the converter to support both variable-torque equipment and machinery that requires higher short-term torque.
A process control card monitors feedback signals and adjusts output frequency without depending on a parent controller for routine regulation. The printed circuitry uses coated circuit boards for improved resistance to humidity and airborne chemicals found in production environments. A front-mounted display presents setpoints, operating status, and alarm codes, making local configuration and fault review easier. The converter has no fieldbus option, so communication with an external network requires separate equipment when networked control is needed. No additional application modules are installed, leaving the standard control package available for conventional motor speed and process control. The enclosed design also helps protect the internal electronics when the drive is mounted near operating machinery rather than inside a separately sealed cabinet.
