The 178B3530 is a frequency converter produced by Danfoss and supplied under the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. The unit converts fixed-frequency three-phase power into a variable output so that plant controllers can match motor speed to changing load requirements. In industrial automation, it is installed inside a control cabinet to manage centrifugal pumps, ventilation fans, or conveying equipment, helping processes maintain consistent temperature, pressure, or material flow without mechanical throttling. The device interfaces with upstream PLCs through analog or relay I/O and delivers a precise voltage-to-frequency ratio for motor protection.
The drive accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply, allowing direct connection to common industrial power systems without transformers. In applications that demand 110% rated torque, it can deliver 2.2 kW of mechanical power, while heavy-duty profiles that require 160% torque are limited to 1.5 kW. Control signals are processed by a process control card that supports closed-loop regulation rather than only open-loop speed control. For auxiliary switching, the factory-installed four additional relays rated for 250 VAC provide independent dry contacts that can be assigned to alarms or interlocks. The configuration has no fieldbus option, so network communication is unavailable and integration relies on discrete wiring. The power section uses standard hardware. Its circuit boards have uncoated surfaces that allow direct access to components during servicing.
The physical format uses a book-style IP20 enclosure, with the heat sink and terminals arranged in a tall, narrow profile that supports close side-by-side installation while limiting contact with live parts. Conducted emissions are addressed by the integrated Class A1 and B filter, which attenuates high-frequency noise on both the line and motor leads in cabinets containing equipment with different sensitivity levels. Local interaction is provided through a supplied display, which is a plug-in front panel that shows operating status, fault codes, and parameter values. The panel gives users direct access to drive information without requiring a separate external interface.
