The 178B7020 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Installed between the three-phase mains and an induction motor, the unit modulates voltage and frequency so plant controllers can adjust motor speed, torque, and energy use during continuous process duties. Its variable-speed output supports equipment such as pumps, fans, conveyors, and other industrial machinery that must respond to changing operating demands.
For electrical connection, the converter accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply, a range commonly used in industrial distribution systems. It is housed in a compact NEMA 1 enclosure that permits panel mounting inside clean, dry indoor cabinets. The integrated process control card provides analog and digital I/O, allowing the drive to regulate closed-loop process variables without an external controller. Communication with supervisory PLCs is available through PROFIBUS DP V0/V1 at 12 Mbaud, enabling high-speed parameter exchange and diagnostic reporting. Under constant-torque loads, the unit delivers 18.5 kW when the application permits a 110% overload. The available output is 15 kW when a 160% short-term overload is required. No internal RFI filter is installed, so external electromagnetic compatibility measures may be necessary where conducted emission limits apply.
Standard hardware includes a standard brake chopper module, which provides an internal path for managing regenerated energy during rapid deceleration cycles. The converter uses uncoated circuit boards, so it should be installed in an environment free from corrosive gases, conductive dust, and excessive moisture. A front-mounted user interface with a supplied display allows operating values, set points, and alarms to be viewed without separate display equipment. No optional application module is installed, so specialized control functions require a compatible external or add-on module. Appropriate cabinet ventilation and installation clearances should be maintained to support reliable heat dissipation during continuous operation.
