The 178B4145 frequency converter is manufactured by Danfoss for the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. The device serves as an adjustable-speed interface between the utility supply and three-phase motors used in pumps, fans, and material-handling lines. By varying the output frequency, it supports closed-loop control of motor torque and speed in industrial automation applications. The model is within the power range capped at 15 kW and includes an internal brake chopper for managing regenerative energy during deceleration.
During normal operation, the drive accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply and converts the incoming power into adjustable motor voltage and frequency. At 110% overload, it is rated for 15 kW, providing additional capacity for acceleration and brief load peaks. The compact IP20 enclosure supports installation inside a control panel while permitting airflow across the heat sink. Dynamic braking is handled by the standard configuration with a brake chopper, which directs excess DC-bus energy to a braking resistor during rapid deceleration. Conducted electrical noise is reduced by an integrated Class A1 and B filter, helping prevent interference from reaching equipment connected to the same supply network. These operating features support common variable-speed applications that require controlled acceleration, deceleration, and continuous motor regulation.
For applications requiring 160% pull-out torque, the unit supplies 11 kW continuously. Command processing is handled by a process control card, allowing analog set points or discrete reference signals to control motor speed. The drive uses non-coated circuit boards, which transfer heat efficiently but are best suited to clean, dry operating environments. It is supplied with no fieldbus option, so control and status signals must use the available standard interfaces. A local display is not included, requiring operating information and parameter access to be provided through other supported controls. The internal brake chopper manages energy returned to the DC bus, while the enclosure allows heat to move toward the converter’s cooling surfaces. The integrated filtering reduces conducted emissions where the converter shares incoming power with other industrial equipment.
