The VLT 5052 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss as a member of the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. The device accepts a fixed-frequency three-phase mains supply and synthesizes a variable output waveform to regulate AC motor speed in industrial automation. By connecting to field I/O and higher-level PLC networks, it provides closed-loop control for conveyors, fan systems, and pumping stations that require precise speed regulation. The converter can adjust its output in response to process references and feedback signals, making it suitable for coordinated machinery and variable-torque loads.
The drive’s control electronics are powered by a 24 V service rail that can supply up to 200 mA to connected sensors and panel indicators. Its eight isolated digital inputs support functions such as starting, stopping, and selecting preset speeds, while two analog voltage channels accept process references. Four pulse or encoder inputs provide direct feedback, and two configurable digital or analog outputs transmit status information or process signals. A system response time of 3 milliseconds supports rapid torque corrections during changing load conditions. The drive maintains a true displacement power factor of 0.90 under nominal load, helping it use the incoming electrical supply effectively. Screened motor cables can extend up to 150 m while remaining within the stated electromagnetic compatibility limits.
The converter can operate continuously at elevations up to 1000 m above sea level and at ambient temperatures as low as 0 °C without derating. Its output frequency has a resolution of ±0.003 Hz, allowing small speed adjustments when multiple drives or process stages must operate in coordination. The power stage can withstand prospective fault currents of 100,000 A when used with suitable high-capacity protective devices. Control wiring accepts conductors up to 1.5 mm², providing sufficient capacity for the available control and feedback connections. Screened brake cables are limited to 20 m, while unscreened motor cables may extend to 300 m where the installation permits their use. These cable allowances support different cabinet layouts and equipment spacing without changing the converter’s primary control functions.
