The 178B2436 is a frequency converter produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Installed between the three-phase mains supply and an induction motor, it adjusts output frequency and voltage so production machinery can run at variable speeds while maintaining constant torque where needed. This electronic regulation allows pump curves, conveyor flow rates, and fan speeds to be adjusted directly from a supervisory controller without mechanical dampers or gear changes. The converter can also support coordinated process changes by responding to hardwired reference and control signals from the surrounding automation system.
The converter accepts a 525–600 V three-phase supply, so it can be connected to common North American high-voltage distribution systems without an autotransformer. Its power stage provides a continuous output of 3.0 kW at 110% torque, but the output is reduced to 2.2 kW when 160% peak torque is required for rapid acceleration. Motor frequency is regulated by a process control card located on the main control board. The standard configuration does not require auxiliary input or output boards for basic operation. A compact IP20 enclosure supports installation inside a ventilated electrical panel while limiting finger contact with live components. The converter has no built-in application option, so specialized functions must be implemented through external control logic. Adequate cabinet ventilation remains necessary to remove heat generated by the power electronics during continuous operation.
A front panel with a supplied display provides parameter entry and live operating readouts, eliminating the need for a handheld programmer during setup. The printed circuit assemblies use uncoated boards, so the converter should be installed in an area free from corrosive vapors and excessive humidity. Communication remains local because the unit has no fieldbus interface, making hardwired analog or digital signals the available methods of remote control. The selected control wiring should be routed separately from motor power conductors to reduce the possibility of electrical interference. The unit has no specified RFI filter performance, so any emission suppression required by the installation must be provided at the cabinet level. External filtering and appropriate cable shielding can be selected according to the requirements of the connected equipment and electrical network.
