The 178B1032 belongs to the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series from Danfoss. As a member of this drive family, the unit functions as an AC frequency converter that modulates the voltage and frequency supplied to three-phase induction motors so plant controllers can maintain accurate speed and torque in automated processes. It is intended for general industrial machinery where tight regulation of motor dynamics is required and cabinet depth is limited. Its compact format supports installation in space-constrained control cabinets used for conveyors, pumps, fans, and other variable-speed equipment.
Incoming power is accepted from a 380–500 V three-phase supply, allowing direct connection to common low-voltage mains without step-up transformers. When an application demands up to 110% short-term overload, the drive delivers 18.5 kW of mechanical output; at 160% torque demand, it is limited to 15 kW, preventing thermal stress on the power stage. For networked control, a Profibus DP V0/V1 12 Mbaud interface is built in, so status words and setpoints can be exchanged with PLCs at high data rates. The electronics sit inside a compact IP20 housing that is suitable for installation inside ventilated control panels. Although the drive is supplied with standard hardware, it omits a local display and relies on remote or fieldbus-based configuration. This arrangement allows operating commands, status information, and process data to be managed through the connected control system.
For positioning tasks, the built-in SyncPos programmable controller extends the converter’s role beyond speed regulation to handle electronic gearing and registration marks. Conducted emissions are attenuated by a filter rated for Class A1 and B, supporting compliance with industrial electromagnetic compatibility limits. The printed circuit boards are assembled as non-coated boards, so the surrounding cabinet air must remain dry and clean. Motor control algorithms reside on a process control card that plugs into the main backplane and works with the standard hardware platform. The card processes control signals and coordinates the converter’s response to changing speed, torque, and positioning commands. Proper cabinet ventilation also helps remove heat from the power electronics during continuous operation.
