The 178B4407 is a frequency converter manufactured by Danfoss for the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. As a process-oriented AC drive, it modulates the voltage and frequency supplied to induction motors so production lines, pumps, and ventilation equipment can match motor speed to real-time demand. Adjusting motor operation to the needs of the application can reduce mechanical wear and energy consumption in automated plants. The standalone converter is intended for cabinet installation in industrial control systems, where it can regulate motor speed without requiring a separate variable-frequency power stage.
The converter uses a Bookstyle IP20 enclosure, allowing it to fit inside narrow control panels while preventing accidental contact with live parts. It accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply, which is a common voltage range for low-voltage industrial power systems, and converts that input into a variable output for the motor terminals. When the driven machine requires a short-term overload at 110% torque, the drive can deliver 1.1 kW. For sustained heavy-duty operation at 160% torque, its output is limited to 0.75 kW. An integrated Class A1 and B RFI filter attenuates conducted emissions, helping the installation meet industrial electromagnetic compatibility requirements without an external line filter.
A process control card manages setpoints and feedback, while a supplied display on the front panel provides direct access to operating parameters. Field communication is handled through DeviceNet, enabling the converter to exchange commands, operating data, and status information with a PLC over the network. The unit has a standard power stage with a brake chopper, which directs regenerated energy produced during deceleration to a connected braking resistor instead of returning it to the mains supply. Its uncoated circuit boards are suited for installation in clean electrical rooms where the electronics are not exposed to significant moisture or corrosive contaminants. The unit does not include a built-in application option, leaving the available control functions suitable for integration with external automation equipment.
