Product Description:
The VLT 5016 frequency converter is manufactured by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. It supplies variable voltage and frequency to three-phase AC motors, allowing production equipment to accelerate, decelerate, or maintain a constant speed under PLC command. In automated material-handling lines, the drive can replace mechanical throttling methods, reduce energy use, and provide greater process flexibility. The product occupies a standard cabinet slot and connects to plant power networks through conventional line and motor terminals.
The drive provides 100% acceleration torque, allowing the motor shaft to reach its target speed quickly. Closed-loop control sustains a speed range ratio of 1:1000, so the same drive can handle creeping motions and full-speed production. The control electronics remain active when powered by a backup feed of 24 V DC. The installation may use up to 150 m of shielded motor cable, while brake wiring may extend to 20 m and unshielded motor leads may extend to 300 m. A prospective fault current of 100,000 A can be cleared by suitable upstream protection. The unit tolerates a supply imbalance of ±1.5% and DC-link ripple below 2 V. Its open-loop speed range ratio is 1:100, and the output may be switched without a limit on the number of operations or a resulting derating requirement.
During startup, the converter delivers 160% starting torque for one minute. It can also supply 160% overload torque for shorter intervals when process peaks occur, helping the motor respond to temporary increases in mechanical demand. The control loop updates every 3 ms, providing fast regulation when operating conditions change. An output frequency step size of ±0.003 Hz supports precise speed adjustment and helps minimize speed error during controlled motion. At nominal load, the drive has a true power factor of 0.90, allowing it to use the supplied electrical power efficiently. The available torque capacity supports loads with varying inertia, while the converter’s braking connections accommodate applications that require controlled deceleration.
