The Danfoss VLT 5008 is part of the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series and features a closed-loop speed accuracy of ±1.5 rpm with a speed range of 1:1000 synchro speed. The VLT 5008 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss for the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. It is an AC drive that regulates induction motor speed in automated machinery by synthesizing a variable-frequency, variable-voltage output from a fixed three-phase supply. In material-handling and process lines, the unit maintains the commanded velocity under changing loads, supports closed-loop feedback, and provides coordinated braking or load-sharing signals when multiple drives must remain synchronized.
Closed-loop operation keeps motor shafts within ±1.5 rpm of the setpoint across a broad control range of 1:1000 relative to synchronous speed. For applications that run without sensors, open-loop accuracy is ±7.5 rpm across a 1:100 range. The output frequency is adjusted in increments no larger than ±0.003 Hz, and the regulator reacts to reference changes within 3 ms, so speed transients remain short. When loaded beyond its continuous rating, the inverter delivers 160% torque for one minute during cyclic operation. The drive has a true displacement power factor of 0.90, which reduces the reactive current drawn from the mains and helps limit unnecessary loading on the incoming supply.
High-inertia starts are supported by a peak motoring capacity of 180% for 0.5 seconds, allowing rapid acceleration of conveyors or fans. A starting boost of 160% for one minute supports heavy loads that remain at low speed for an extended period. The drive tolerates upstream fault currents of up to 100,000 A without damage to its internal bus components. Installation limits include brake-resistor leads up to 20 m, load-sharing links up to 25 m, and unscreened motor cables up to 300 m before additional filters are required. Control and serial wiring may use conductors with cross-sectional areas up to 1.5 mm², matching typical field input and output harnesses.
