Product Description:
The 178F2244 is a frequency converter produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. This AC drive converts a fixed-frequency industrial supply into a variable-frequency output so that induction motors running conveyors, pumps, or fans can be regulated precisely from a central controller. By adjusting motor speed electronically instead of throttling mechanically, the converter helps maintain stable flow, pressure, or speed in automated process equipment. Its compact form allows placement inside standard control cabinets on plant floors.
Mechanical integration is simplified by the Compact NEMA 1 enclosure, which provides basic protection while keeping the overall depth low for front-panel mounting. The power section accepts a 525–690 V three-phase supply, covering the higher-voltage networks typically found in heavy-duty facilities. Under constant-torque demands, it can deliver 45 kW when the application requires up to 110% overload. Control accuracy is managed by a process control card that executes proportional, integral, and preset logic blocks. Networked supervision is supported through Profibus DP V0/V1 at 12 Mbaud, enabling real-time setpoint changes and feedback exchange with plant PLCs. No application option is built in, and the unit is supplied without an integrated RFI filter, so external measures may be required to meet applicable electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
The drive is extended with a 24 V backup and brake chopper. The 24 V circuit maintains parameter memory during brief power interruptions, while the brake chopper dissipates regenerated energy during rapid deceleration. For high-peak duty cycles, the drive supplies 37 kW at 160% torque, making it suitable for accelerating large inertial loads. Reliability in dusty or humid areas is improved by coated circuit boards that protect sensitive traces against moisture and conductive contaminants. A supplied front-mounted display shows speed, current, and fault codes, permitting local adjustments without a separate programming device.
