The 178B1209 is a frequency converter manufactured by Danfoss and included in the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Designed to regulate the speed of three-phase induction motors, the unit converts fixed mains power into a variable-frequency output. This operation allows motor speed to follow changing process requirements in automated plant systems. Pumps and fans can use the adjustable output to match flow or pressure to demand rather than operating continuously at full speed.
The converter accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply, allowing it to connect directly to compatible industrial mains without an additional transformer. When an application requires 110% short-term torque, the inverter can deliver 7.5 kW. Its output under an extended overload of 160% is limited to 5.5 kW, allowing the drive to support continuous heavy-duty operation at the lower power level. The slim book-style IP20 housing conserves panel space but requires installation inside a protected enclosure. A standard brake chopper allows regenerative energy from rapidly decelerating loads to be managed through a compatible braking arrangement. Conducted emissions are reduced by an integrated Class A1 and B filter, helping the converter meet common electromagnetic compatibility requirements without separate filtering components.
Control functions are handled by a process control card, which provides analog reference processing and basic PID regulation. Although the converter does not have a fieldbus option, it can receive commands and exchange status signals through conventional input and output terminals. The printed circuit boards are protected by coated circuit boards, which improve resistance to airborne contaminants commonly found in pump or fan rooms. Local operation is supported by a supplied display that presents operating speed, current, parameter values, and alarm codes without requiring a separate computer. Parameters can be entered through the keypad, while the conventional control terminals provide a straightforward connection for external switches, sensors, and analog reference signals.
