The VLT 5006 is a frequency converter produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Designed for plant-level automation, the drive converts constant three-phase mains power into a programmed AC output that allows controllers to match motor speed and torque to process demand, reducing mechanical stress and energy consumption in conveyors, pumps, and general machinery. For fault containment, the power stage withstands a symmetrical short-circuit current of 100,000 A when properly fused, providing coordination with high-capacity industrial feeders.
The acceleration torque reaches 100% of the motor rating, allowing rapid ramp-up without stalling. When a load is applied at standstill, the converter can deliver a starting torque of 160% for 1 minute, with a short-burst capability of 180% for 0.5 seconds to overcome static friction. Closed-loop regulation has a speed range of 1:1000 relative to synchronous speed, allowing precise low-speed positioning under feedback control. The microprocessor and current regulators react within a 3 ms system response window, while the inverter updates its output with a frequency resolution of ±0.003 Hz to provide smooth transitions during speed and torque changes.
The converter can operate at up to 95% non-condensing humidity, and stored units can tolerate 93% relative humidity without damage. The incoming line may deviate by ±2.0% from nominal, and the drive compensates for that imbalance while holding motor current within ±2.0% of its commanded value. Internal control algorithms maintain displacement and distortion performance that produces a power factor of 0.90 at rated load, reducing reactive demand on the supply network. The available current regulation helps the connected motor maintain stable operation when line conditions or mechanical loads fluctuate within the permitted ranges.
