The 178B4878 is a frequency converter manufactured by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. The unit modulates the voltage and frequency supplied to a three-phase induction motor, enabling closed-loop process control in automated conveyors, pumps, and fans. By translating fixed mains power into variable output, it helps facilities match motor speed to real-time demand, reduce energy consumption, and limit mechanical stress during acceleration and deceleration.
Designed for industrial grids, the drive accepts a 380–500 V three-phase supply and draws a rated input current of 128 A at 460 V when operating at nominal load. Its output section can deliver an apparent power of 102 kVA, and the inverter sustains up to 147 A for 60-second normal overload events without derating. For heavier cyclic loads, the current ceiling rises to 106 A when operating with the 160% torque profile. Network integration is handled through a Profibus DP V0/V1 12 Mbaud interface that passes setpoints and diagnostic data to PLCs. The internal process control card maintains a true power factor of 0.90, while a factory-installed Class A1 and B RFI filter limits conducted emissions so the converter can share cabinets with sensitive instrumentation. A front-mounted display provides local access to operating parameters.
The drive is housed in a compact IP20 enclosure and requires a motor cable with a minimum cross-sectional area of 25 mm² to carry the commanded current. Under fault conditions, the power stage is rated to withstand a prospective short-circuit current of 100,000 A, allowing appropriately rated upstream protective devices to interrupt the fault. Continuous operation at the process-torque setting provides a typical shaft output of 75 kW. When high-torque mode is selected, the rated output decreases to 55 kW to prevent thermal overload during prolonged operation at 160% torque. The drive uses standard hardware and non-coated circuit boards, while the absence of built-in application options reduces the number of specialized components required for servicing.
