Product Description:

The EK1101 is a coupler designed by Beckhoff Automation to provide a link between the widely used Ether CAT communication protocol and Ether CAT terminal units. This device is built to meet international standards; it receives telegram signals through the 100BASE-TX operating at a transmission rate of 100 megabits per second. These signals are converted to the corresponding E-bus signal representation, which is sent to the connected Ether CAT terminal. The unit can be used with up to 65,534 Ether Cat terminals during its operation. The connection cable to be used for the data transmission with this unit should belong to at least category five classification and should be well shielded to reduce interference. There is a total of three hexadecimal ID switches for this product; these IDs provide the option to switch between various topologies. The coupler can also be used with up to 4096 configurable ID.

The EK1101 bus coupler is provided with a supply voltage of about 24 volts; the output of this voltage provides the connected Ether CAT terminals with the current they require for efficient communication. The current provided by the coupler is as high as 2 amperes; this supplied value can be increased through the integration of additional field terminals. During transmission, the maximum amount of delay that can occur is approximately 1 microsecond.

The EK1101 is provided with housing designed to prevent foreign interference according to the IP20 protection category; this housing is made from polycarbonate material, it has a high electrical and thermal resistance and an external dimension of 44 by 100 by 68 millimeters. Installation should be done indoors in a vertical position and on the 35 millimeters DIN rail, which is built according to EN 60715. Side-by-side mounting is also permitted by means of a double slot and key connection.

LED / symptom you see What it’s telling you First things to try
DC LED off – no LEDs lit 24 V supply is missing or < 22 V Measure at the supply terminal; replace blown fuse and retighten the spring clamp; be sure PE ground is present
RUN LED off, ERR LED red right after power-up Coupler is stuck in INIT state (HW fault during self-test) Power-cycle > 10 s; if the fault returns the coupler has to be replaced
RUN LED flashes 2 Hz (green) forever Device stays in PRE-OP because the PLC didn’t send configuration Check that the master downloaded the correct EL-terminal map; re-scan and activate configuration in TwinCAT/TIA
RUN LED flashes 1 Hz (green) Device is in SAFE-OP (process-data mismatch) Compare PDO assignments to the real terminal order, correct and restart EtherCAT
ERR LED single-flash (red) Invalid EEPROM / wrong firmware Reflash the latest firmware with Beckhoff Firmware Update Tool
LINK/ACT LEDs dark, master shows “lost slave” Broken Cat-5 cable or bad RJ-45 Swap patch lead, clean the bushings, verify switch port – link should be 100 Base-TX
CF LED red during start-up Compact-Flash card missing or has CRC errors Reseat the card; if the LED stays red clone and replace the CF card
ERR LED triple-flash (red) HotConnect address conflict Make sure only one EK1101 in the network has the “ID-switch” set to the selected node number
Cyclic resets when cabinet warms up Over-temperature (> 70 °C at heatsink) Keep ambient ≤ 55 °C; clear airflow, leave ≥ 30 mm above the coupler for convection
RUN LED green, but process data not changing Hot-plugged EL-terminal not recognised Do an EtherCAT scan for changes or reboot the station so the new terminal is registered by the master
LED pattern or code Meaning
DC OFF (all LEDs dark) No 24 V or < 22 V at Us
RUN OFF + ERR RED after power-up HW self-test failed – coupler defective
RUN 2 Hz GREEN (stays PRE-OP) Master never sent config
RUN 1 Hz GREEN (SAFE-OP) PDO size or order mismatch
ERR 1-flash RED EEPROM / firmware CRC error
ERR 3-flash RED HotConnect ID conflict
CF LED RED CompactFlash missing or write error
LINK/ACT dark – master “lost slave” Broken RJ-45 or switch port down
RUN green – no process data New EL-terminal hot-plugged, not scanned
Repeated resets when cabinet warms Heatsink > 70 °C
