The EK1101-0050 EtherCAT coupler is produced by Beckhoff within the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It acts as a fieldbus head that connects a control network to a stack of Beckhoff I/O terminals, forwarding process data between higher-level controllers and the terminal segment. By translating the EtherCAT protocol on the bus side to the internal E-Bus signal inside the terminal row, the unit supports fast and deterministic I/O exchange in industrial automation cells and other distributed control systems.

Its external communication layer uses 2 x RJ45 ports that form an in-line EtherCAT segment supporting a full-duplex data rate of 100 Mbit/s. For electromagnetic compatibility and signal integrity, the coupler requires a Cat.5 shielded patch cable between connected nodes. Mechanical dimensions of 44 x 100 x 68 mm allow installation on a 35 mm DIN rail without exceeding the profile of adjacent I/O modules, while the housing carries an IP20 protection rating suitable for cabinet environments. Three hex rotary switches provide 4096 configurable node IDs for straightforward network addressing.
