The EK1101-0080 EtherCAT coupler is produced by Beckhoff within the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It acts as a modular gateway between an EtherCAT fieldbus and the company’s pluggable I/O terminals, allowing control systems to attach decentralized digital or analog channels over standard Ethernet cabling. By translating the EtherCAT protocol directly into the internal E-bus format, the unit forms the first node in a terminal string and supplies both communication timing and low-voltage power to the attached modules.
The coupler communicates on the line at 100 MBaud, the fixed data rate used by the 100BASE-TX standard, and forwards frames through two RJ45 ports that support automatic link detection. Typical telegram latency across the device is 1 µs, so hard real-time motion or safety slots stay synchronized when large stacks of terminals are present. The internal electronics draw 70 mA, while additional consumption from downstream terminals is calculated as one-quarter of their own E-bus current. The internal backplane is energized at 5 V, and the logic domain is separated from the user signals by a 500 V galvanic barrier. The IP20 housing is intended for installation inside a control cabinet, where it is protected from direct exposure to moisture and debris.
A single power pair feeds the terminal row with a 24 VDC control voltage and can pass up to 10 A through the integrated power contacts for sensors or actuators. Upstream wiring may extend to 100 m over Cat 5e cable without repeaters, providing flexibility in cabinet placement. The node table can enumerate 65,535 EtherCAT terminals, and each slave can be assigned one of 4,096 configurable IDs for structured addressing. Up to 4.2 GB of I/O data can be addressed across the segment, providing a large logical process-image space for distributed channels. Fast Hot Connect is supported, allowing prewired machine sections to connect to the active network while communication with the remaining nodes continues.
