The EK1101-0008 is an EtherCAT coupler produced by Beckhoff within the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. Mounted at the head of a terminal block, it translates network-side EtherCAT telegrams to the internal E-bus so that digital, analog, or specialty terminals can be added in any order. By performing this gateway function, the unit lets controllers aggregate large amounts of distributed I/O across machining cells, packaging lines, and other automated equipment without additional fieldbus hardware.

The coupler presents a set of 2 × M8 sockets as its primary bus interface and moves data at 100 Mbit/s in conformity with the 100BASE-TX Ethernet standard. When cabling meets at least the CAT 5 category, link segments can extend to 100 m without timing errors. Galvanic separation between the field and logic sections is provided by an isolation barrier rated at 500 V. Up to 2 A of E-bus current is available below 55 °C to energize the attached terminals, and three hexadecimal ID switches allow manual node addressing. A single 24 VDC feeder supplies both the logic electronics and the power contacts, simplifying control cabinet wiring. This shared feeder arrangement reduces the number of separate supply connections required at the terminal block.

The system supports up to 65,535 EtherCAT terminals, providing an address space of 4.2 GB for process data exchange. Applications that require live module exchange can assign 4,096 hot-connect IDs so connected groups appear immediately at the correct logical position. The internal copper conductors tolerate a continuous load of 10 A, supporting actuators that draw significant current while remaining within the wiring limits. Reliable operation continues in enclosures with relative humidity up to 95%, and the housing has an IP20 protection rating that prevents finger access to energized parts.
