The EK1110-0043 is an EtherCAT coupler manufactured by Beckhoff for the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. Installed at the start of a terminal string, it converts Ethernet frames from an upstream controller into the internal E-bus signals used by the modular I/O terminals. The device provides the mechanical and electrical gateway needed to expand an industrial automation system with additional digital or analog terminals while keeping them on the same real-time EtherCAT network. Its compact format allows the terminal string to be installed within a control cabinet without requiring a separate network conversion module.
The coupler forwards telegrams at a data rate of 100 Mbit/s, and frames enter the unit through one RJ45 communication interface. Control and sensor power comes from a field power rail supplied with 24 VDC. An integrated regulator produces an internal E-bus potential of 3.3 V for the logic circuits within the terminal assembly. The housing has an IP20 protection rating, which guards against finger contact with live parts but does not protect the device from water. It must therefore be installed in a suitable enclosure that prevents exposure to moisture and conductive contamination. The coupler does not support CoE, so it does not process CANopen over EtherCAT object dictionaries. However, EtherCAT protocol traffic passes through the unit transparently. The X1 port requires a shielded Category 5 EtherCAT cable to preserve signal integrity at the rated transmission speed.
Electrical isolation between the incoming field supply and the low-voltage electronics has a dielectric strength of 500 V. The housing snaps onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail, allowing it to be mounted beside compatible Beckhoff terminals and other control components. A board-to-board connection on the rear uses a Samtec SSQ-112-21-L-D-K-TR connector with 24 pins. Its plated contacts carry the X2 data medium to the next terminal in the chain through printed circuit board tracks. This direct connection reduces external wiring between adjacent terminals and maintains the continuous E-bus path through the assembled I/O station.
