Kollmorgen S700 servo drives combine motor current, speed and position control in a single-axis digital amplifier. Current classes range from 1.5 A to 72 A, with configurations for three-phase 208–480 VAC supplies and separate 110–230 VAC versions.
An S700 replacement must match more than the current rating. The voltage code, STO arrangement, expansion cards, feedback configuration and any customer-specific suffix affect how the drive connects to the machine. EtherCAT and CANopen are onboard, while three expansion slots support additional communication, position I/O and safety options. Matching these details helps preserve the control interfaces and safety architecture already installed on the axis.
S701 Servo Drives
S701 drives occupy the lowest S700 current class. The S70102 uses a 70 mm-wide housing and provides 1.5 A RMS continuous output at three-phase 400 or 480 VAC. Its continuous rating increases to 2 A at 230 VAC and 2.5 A at 208 VAC, with a peak output of 4.5 A for up to two seconds. The actual supply voltage therefore matters when comparing the drive with the motor’s continuous-current requirement.
The S70101 and S70102 use different STO arrangements: the electrical/mechanical option code 1 identifies a single-channel version, while code 2 identifies dual-channel STO. Additional option characters distinguish standard units from drives equipped with position I/O. For example, S70102-NAPMNA includes a PosI/O card in slot 2. Preserve the existing safety connections and position interface when selecting a replacement.
Part number | Current class | Supply voltage | Configuration |
1.5 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Legacy single-channel STO version
1.5 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Dual-channel STO; no expansion cards
1.5 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Dual-channel STO; PosI/O in slot 2 |

S703 Servo Drives
S70302 drives retain the 70 mm-wide housing while increasing continuous output to 3 A RMS at three-phase 400 or 480 VAC. At lower supply voltages, the continuous rating is 4 A at 230 VAC and 5 A at 208 VAC. Peak output reaches 9 A for up to two seconds, or 6 A for up to five seconds. These separate limits help distinguish a brief acceleration requirement from a longer overload demand.
Network and safety options remain important within the same current class. S70302-NANANA uses the onboard interfaces without expansion cards, while S70302-PBNANA adds PROFIBUS in slot 1. S70302-PBNAS4 combines PROFIBUS with an S4 safety card in slot 3. A matching amplifier power stage alone does not reproduce the functions of an installed safety card.
Part number | Current class | Supply voltage | Configuration |
3 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | No expansion cards
3 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | PROFIBUS in slot 1
3 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | PROFIBUS in slot 1; S4 safety card in slot 3 |
S706 Servo Drives
S70602 drives supply 6 A RMS continuously at the specified three-phase 208, 230, 400 and 480 VAC operating points. Short-term output reaches 18 A for up to two seconds or 12 A for up to five seconds. The 70 mm-wide housing contains the power stage, supply filtering, soft-start circuit and an internal braking resistor, allowing motor control and regenerative-energy handling within the amplifier.
Motor feedback must match the drive’s selected feedback mode and connection. The S70602 platform supports resolver and multiple encoder formats, while onboard EtherCAT and CANopen provide network control. PROFIBUS and SERCOS II configurations use different slot 1 cards; an S70602-PBNANA and an S70602-SENANA therefore have different fieldbus hardware despite sharing the same current class.
Part number | Current class | Supply voltage | Configuration |
6 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | No expansion cards
6 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | PROFIBUS in slot 1
6 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | SERCOS II in slot 1 |
S712 Servo Drives
S712 drives provide 12 A RMS continuous output in the same 70 mm-wide housing used by the lower-current S701–S706 models. Standard S71202 amplifiers provide up to 24 A peak, while S7120S versions increase the two-second peak rating to 30 A. Both retain a 12 A continuous rating, and the five-second peak rating is 24 A. The extended-peak option is relevant when acceleration demands exceed the standard unit’s short-term output.
The S712 power stage has a rated input requirement of 9 kVA for continuous operation. This input figure should not be treated as a motor shaft-power rating. Motor current, supply voltage, duty cycle and regenerative braking requirements still need to be matched separately. Where the machine uses PROFIBUS, the PB option must also be retained alongside the correct standard or extended-peak power stage.
Part number | Current class | Supply voltage | Configuration |
12 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Standard 24 A peak; no expansion cards
12 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Standard 24 A peak; PROFIBUS in slot 1
12 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Extended 30 A peak for up to 2 seconds |
S724 Servo Drives
S724 drives raise continuous output to 24 A RMS and use a wider 100 mm housing. Standard S72402 versions deliver 48 A peak, while S7240S variants provide 72 A for up to two seconds. The five-second limit remains 48 A for both versions. Selecting the extended-peak option does not increase the amplifier’s continuous current capability.
The higher-current power stage also increases the cabinet cooling requirement. At rated current, S72402/S7240S thermal dissipation is 330 W, including power-supply losses but excluding braking losses. The internal brake resistor handles regenerative energy within its rating; an external resistor may be required when the braking duty exceeds that capacity. Confirm available cabinet space, airflow and braking requirements before increasing the drive size.
Part number | Current class | Supply voltage | Configuration |
24 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Standard 48 A peak; no expansion cards
24 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Standard 48 A peak; PROFIBUS in slot 1
24 A RMS | 3-phase 208–480 VAC | Extended 72 A peak for up to 2 seconds |

Match the electrical supply and current duty.
Confirm voltage code 0 or 6, the number of supply phases, motor continuous current and the required peak duration. S70102 and S70302 output changes with line voltage, while single-phase operation reduces the available output of some voltage-code-6 models. Extended-peak S712 and S724 versions retain their original continuous ratings.
Match the motor and feedback interface.
Confirm the motor type, pole count, feedback device and connector arrangement. Resolver, incremental encoder, absolute encoder and single-cable feedback configurations require the appropriate drive setup and hardware revision. Retain the motor parameters and feedback settings needed to commission the replacement.
Match communication and expansion cards.
Identify whether the axis uses onboard EtherCAT/CANopen or an installed fieldbus card. Record every populated slot, including PosI/O, PosI/O-Monitor and safety cards. A slot 1 expansion card can be combined with the F2 option in slot 2; other slot 1/slot 2 card combinations are restricted.
Check safety and holding-brake requirements.
Confirm single- or dual-channel STO and any additional safety card. STO prevents torque generation but does not provide electrical isolation or mechanically hold a suspended load. The motor holding-brake circuit and the machine’s safety-rated braking arrangement must be assessed separately.
Allow for cooling and mounting.
Standard S700 drives are IP20 units for vertical cabinet mounting. Rated operation is specified from 0 to 40°C; operation above 40°C up to 55°C requires 2.5% power derating per degree. Installation above 1,000 m up to 2,500 m also requires derating. Check enclosure space, ventilation and whether the installed S748 uses a coldplate.
Check braking energy and preserve the configuration.
Match the braking resistor arrangement to the drive and deceleration duty. Save the drive parameters, firmware identification and machine-specific settings before replacement whenever the existing unit remains accessible. Include the full nameplate code, fitted option cards and fault history with the quote request.
