Product Description:

The S7120S-NANANA is a servo drive produced by Kollmorgen within the S700 Servo Drives series. As a stand-alone controller for synchronous and asynchronous servomotors, it conditions three-phase AC power, modulates it through an internal brake resistor, and delivers regulated current to the motor windings. Dual-channel STO circuitry is included so that safety relays can remove torque without cutting main power. EtherCAT and CANopen ports are provided directly on the front panel, giving deterministic motion control without an added expansion card and supporting coordinated axes in packaging, material-handling, and machine-tool applications.

The drive accepts a three-phase supply in the 208 to 480 V range and rectifies it to a DC bus that may rise to 900 VDC. From this link, it can deliver up to 9 kVA of continuous power while supplying a nominal motor phase current of 12 Arms. For rapid accelerations, the Extended Ipeak option lets the output reach 30 Arms for two seconds, assisted by the onboard brake resistor that dissipates regenerated energy. Continuous thermal losses are 20 W with the drive disabled and 160 W while rated, so cabinet ventilation must be sized accordingly. Mechanical proportions are fixed at 70 mm width, 243 mm depth, and 345 mm height, allowing side-by-side mounting of multiple axes on a common backplane.

During longer overloads, the controller can still supply 24 Arms for five seconds, and its IGBTs switch at 8 kHz to minimize motor ripple while maintaining efficiency. The internal heat sink expels up to 160 W under full load, yet the total mass stays at only 4.4 kg, easing installation on hinged panels. Fieldbus wiring uses front-panel connectors near the digital I/O header, and an empty option slot is reserved for future encoder or analog interface cards if application requirements change. The compact housing, internal brake resistor, and integrated STO help the drive fit machines that need high dynamic range without extra enclosure depth.
