Product Description:

Kollmorgen produces motion control products such as digital servo amplifiers. The S406AM-PB is one of these amplifiers that is intended to drive suitable brushless synchronous servomotor for speed, position, or torque control. This amplifier is a component that is built into an electrical apparatus and can be commissioned only as part of the machine. Additional filter measures are to be observed if the digital amplifier is to be used in business or residential areas. Ensure that the rated voltage of the motor is as high as the DC link voltage of the S406AM-PB.

This Kollmorgen S400 amplifier features a 6Arms current rating, 230-400V voltage rating, master module function, and PROFIBUS expansion. Ensure that the PROFIBUS cable routing, cables, bus connectors, shielding, and propagation times are compatible with the S406AM-PB amplifier. Mount it vertically on a DIN rail and leave a clearance below it to ensure airflow if an additional fan is used. To ensure seamless operating and parameter setting, it is fully programmable through the RS232 interface, station address setting is conducted via two keys and an LED status display, and software setup is done via a serial interface of the PC.

The S406AM-PB meets UL and cUL conformance. It is safe and legal to use across North America. It conforms to EC directives such as EC Low Voltage Directive and EC EMC Directive. It comprises of a rated output current of 6 and 12Arms, 8 kHz clock frequency of output stage, and a 450V overvoltage switch-off threshold. It weighs 3kg and has an IP 20 protection class. Ensure that it is operated inside an enclosed control cabinet and that the temperature is at least 45 degrees.

Fault / LED code What it means on the S400 front panel Trouble Shooting Steps
F01 – Heat-sink over-temp The amplifier has reached ≈80 °C and disabled its output stage
  • Reduce cabinet/ambient temperature
  • Clean or blow out vents
  • Verify the fan is connected and spinning
F02 – DC-bus over-voltage Regenerative energy or a high mains causes the bus to climb beyond the limit
  • Check incoming mains setting
  • Inspect / size braking resistor and its fuse
  • Lengthen decel ramps
  • Link DC busses of multiple drives
F03 – Following-error limit Position deviation exceeded the window you set
  • Look for mechanical jams
  • Retune speed/position gains
  • Increase deviation window (FOLLOWERR) if appropriate
F04 – Feedback fault Resolver/encoder signal missing, shorted or out-of-range
  • Inspect feedback cable & shielding
  • Test or replace encoder
  • Verify FBTYPE parameter matches motor feedback
F05 – DC-bus under-voltage Mains sagged below threshold during enable/run
  • Verify all phases present
  • Respect the “power-on, then enable 0.5 s later” sequence
  • Check line contactor and wiring
F06 – Motor over-temperature PTC/thermostat inside motor opened
  • Check airflow around motor
  • Confirm correct temp-sensor type
  • Reduce load or duty cycle
F07 – Internal low-voltage rail One of the drive’s logic rails is out of tolerance
  • Remove external 24 V loads (e.g., brake)
  • Measure 24 V supply quality
  • f fault persists, return drive for service
F08 – Overspeed Actual speed exceeded VOSPD limit
  • Verify commanded speed & gearing
  • Check feedback wiring for swaps
  • Raise VOSPD only after confirming mechanics
F09 – EEPROM checksum Parameter store corrupted during power-down
  • Reload saved parameters
  • Save (STORE) again
  • If fault repeats after power cycle, service the drive
F11 – Brake-control fault Drive cannot energise or read motor brake
  • Inspect brake cable (broken, shorted)
  • Confirm brake current ≥150 mA
  • Set MBRAKE = 0 for motors without brake

Frequently Asked Questions about S406AM-PB:

Q: What materials is required for the proper mounting of the S406AM-PB?

A: The S406AM-PB servo amplifer should be mounted in a control cabinet that can provid a minimum protection that meets IP54. The mounting of the servo amplifier requires 2 mounting rails designed according to IEC60715. A screwdriver with a 5mm blade width is required.

Q: Can the S406AM-PB servo amplifier be operated with an edditinal fan unit?

A: The operation of the S406AM-PB servo amplifier with an add on fan is required. The electrical add-on fan is necessary to ensure the temperature around the amplifier is within the rated range.

Q: Does the S406AM-PB require a capacitor module for operation?

A: The Kollmorgen Capacitor module can be connected to the S406AM-PB servo amplifier to absorb the energy generated by the motor when it is operating in generator mode. The energy absorbed by the capacitor is fed back into the DC bus link as and when it is required.

Q: How many motor feedback type is supported by the S406AM-PB controller?

A: The S406AM-PB supports the motor common types of feedback devices whose function must be assigned with the parameters. Example of these feedback types include the Resolver, SinCos encoder BISS, SinCos encoder ENDAT, ROD 5V, the sensorless feedback and lots more.

Q: Where can operators find the setup software required for the configuration of the S406AM-PB servo amplifer?

A: The setup software required by the S406AM-PB servo amplifer can be found on the accompanying CD-ROM. It can also be downloaded from the Kollmergen website.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The S406AM-PB supports several different versions of communication interfaces - including Resolver, SinCos encoder BISS, SinCos encoder ENDAT, and ROD 5V. This makes it an easy addition into many different established lines.’’
