Product Description:
The S406BA-PB is a servo drive produced by Kollmorgen within the S400 Servo Drives series. The unit is an axis module that forms the power stage between a motion controller and a brushless servo motor. By regulating phase current and monitoring feedback, it enables precise torque, velocity, and position control in packaging machinery, material handling lines, and other automated equipment requiring coordinated multi-axis movement.
Electrically, the axis delivers a continuous phase current of 6 A rms, with short-term demands handled by a peak current of 12 A rms. The output current form factor of 1.01 indicates that the drive’s sinusoidal modulation keeps RMS and average values nearly identical, minimizing motor heating. Command signals are accepted through a ±10 V analog channel digitized at 14-bit resolution, and this input presents an impedance of 20 kΩ to avoid loading sensitive controllers. Four optically isolated digital inputs and two digital outputs support enable, limit, and fault functions. With no onboard low-voltage supply, external 24 V logic power must be provided. The module dissipates 15 W while idling and 40 W when delivering rated current. The chassis measures 50 mm wide and 240 mm deep, conserving space in the control panel.
System integration is carried out through the optional PROFIBUS expansion card, allowing the module to exchange setpoints and status information with PLC networks at speeds up to 12 Mbit/s. Motor selection must account for the permitted load inductance of 40 mH, which protects the switching stage from overvoltage during regeneration. The aluminum housing conducts heat directly to the mounting rail, simplifying cabinet cooling. Despite its power rating, the drive weighs only 1.7 kg, easing installation on multi-axis backplanes. As an axis module, it shares the same height as other S400 units, enabling dense stacking and the use of common bus bars without additional spacers or wiring adjustments.
