Product Description:

The EK1110 coupler is produced by Beckhoff as part of the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. Designed for industrial automation networks, the device acts as a gateway between a control master and a string of EtherCAT Terminals, forming the head module that converts the incoming Ethernet physics into the system-specific E-bus used inside the I/O station. By doing so, it supplies both data and power to the subsequent terminals and establishes deterministic communication that is required for synchronized motion, process control, and distributed sensing tasks.

It presents a single 1 x RJ45 port as its bus interface and speaks the EtherCAT protocol, forwarding frames at a rate of 100 Mbit/s. Data are carried over a Shielded Cat.5 Ethernet Cable, and segment spacing can extend up to 100 m between adjacent stations, supporting line topology. An internal switch logic passes telegrams directly to the integrated E-bus, so no repeater is needed. The coupler draws operating power from the E-bus backplane and distributes it to downstream terminals, minimizing wiring. Line topology simplifies diagnostics because each node reports status to the master, and loop-back monitoring inside EK1110 detects cable faults.

The housing measures 44 mm x 100 mm x 68 mm and is molded from polycarbonate for use inside control cabinets. The module snaps onto a 35 mm DIN Rail at any orientation because the installation position is variable, letting designers place it beside other rail devices. During operation the coupler draws about 130 mA from the E-bus, so thermal load on crowded enclosures stays low. Protection corresponds to an IP20 rating, indicating finger-safe terminals but requiring placement inside a closed panel. These mechanical and electrical attributes suit compact control islands where tool-less mounting and reliable signal flow are priorities.

What you see (LED / behaviour) What it means Quick corrective check
DC LED off – all LEDs dark No 24 V on the power contacts Measure the supply; replace the cabinet fuse or tighten the spring-clamp plug
RUN LED off + ERR LED red immediately after power-up Coupler HW self-test failed (state = INIT) Power-cycle ≥ 10 s; if it repeats, the module is defective
RUN LED flashes 2 Hz green and never turns solid Device stuck in PRE-OP – master did not download the configuration In TwinCAT/TIA activate the terminal map and restart the bus
RUN LED flashes 1 Hz green Device in SAFE-OP – PDO size/order mismatch Compare EL-terminal order with PLC project, correct and reboot
ERR LED single-flash red Invalid EEPROM / firmware CRC Re-flash the latest EK1110 firmware with the Beckhoff Update Tool
ERR LED double-flash red “Slave not present” – the coupler isn’t seen by the master Check that the address is scanned, verify topology, correct if missing
ERR LED red, master shows “link error” Physical link lost on RJ-45 Swap the Ethernet cable, clean the RJ-45, verify 100 Mb link status
ERR LED shows “missing link” code Down-stream port has no cable or bad shield Check the spur cable, ensure < 100 m Cat-5e and proper shielding
RUN green but process data frozen New EL-terminal was hot-plugged but not scanned Run “Scan for Changes” (TwinCAT) or reboot the EtherCAT line
Coupler resets when cabinet > 55 °C Over-temperature derating Improve airflow; leave ≥ 30 mm above the unit; keep ambient ≤ 55 °C
