The EK1101-0018 is an EtherCAT coupler manufactured by Beckhoff for the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It serves as the head station that joins a row of Beckhoff I/O terminals to an EtherCAT fieldbus and forwards data through the internal E-bus. Inside a control cabinet, the device enables a PLC to exchange process signals with modular slice I/O without additional gateways. This arrangement supports compact control systems in which terminal functions can be selected according to the connected sensors, actuators, and other field devices.
On the network interface, the coupler communicates at 100 Mbaud, the data rate of 100BASE-TX, so it can participate in high-speed, deterministic control loops. The electronics operate from a 24 V DC supply, which also provides field power to downstream terminals through integrated power contacts. Two twisted-pair ports with 2 × RJ45 sockets permit line wiring or redundant ring wiring, and each copper segment may run up to 100 m without repeaters, in accordance with standard Ethernet cabling rules. All telegrams follow the EtherCAT Device Protocol, allowing distributed clocks, Hot Connect addressing, and process image exchange with cycle times in the microsecond range. Typical current consumption is 70 mA plus one-quarter of the combined E-bus load. The coupler adds a propagation delay of 1 µs as data passes between the network and connected terminals.
The internal backplane can supply up to 2 A on the 5 V E-bus, delivering logic power to a stack of digital or analog terminals. Separate power contacts can carry 10 A for field loads such as solenoids or relays. An IP20 housing limits the device to dry, enclosure-mounted installations but allows tool-free push-in assembly next to DIN-rail terminal blocks. The logical address space reaches 4.2 GB, enabling large channel counts to be mapped without segmentation, while up to 4,096 Hot Connect IDs support rapid reconfiguration of terminal strings during maintenance or format changes. Link integrity is maintained through the 100BASE-TX transfer medium. A maximum E-bus current monitor issues a diagnostic when the permitted load is exceeded.
