Product Description:

The X20SLX842 is a safety-rated I/O slice from B&R Automation in the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Intended for distributed machine architectures, the device monitors field sensors and actuators while exchanging data with a safety controller over a deterministic real-time bus. By combining safe inputs, safe outputs, and localized pulse generation in one housing, the module helps reduce cabinet wiring and supports rapid shutdown functions in industrial automation. This arrangement allows safety-related signal handling to stay close to the machine section where switches, guards, and other devices are installed.

Four synchronized terminal drivers supply a 24 VDC pulse output voltage that can be switched through 4 pulse outputs for encoder reference or test pulses. The module provides 8 Type A inputs for devices such as e-stop buttons and light curtains, and individual load switching is handled by 4 Type A outputs that are internally checked against short-circuit and cross-fault conditions. The continuous current capability of those outputs is 24 VDC, 3 A Type A output rating, and fault detection to shutdown remains below the 500 µs Type A OSSD limit to support fast removal of hazardous motion. This combination allows one slice to handle both sensor monitoring and output switching without moving those functions to separate modules.

For axis-related protection, the slice can supervise 4 Safe Motion axes, applying safe torque-off or safe stop commands without routing signals through the main PLC. Network capacity reaches 10 safe nodes, allowing several X20 safety slices to share data on the same segment without exceeding diagnostic limits. Actuator diversity is extended by 2 Type B2 outputs intended for low-current valves or lamp indicators. Their maximum load is 24 VDC, 50 mA Type B2 output rating, and their OSSD response also stays below 500 µs. This setup supports applications that need both higher-current safe outputs and lower-current signaling points within the same safety module.

Symptom / LED indication* Likely cause Recommended corrective action
FAILSAFE LED solid red immediately after boot Entire module in FailSafe state after a safety error Open SafeDESIGNER ➜ read last diagnostic entry; correct wiring / network fault, then clear the safety error & warm-restart the controller
FAILSAFE LED blinks 1 Hz indefinitely openSAFETY channel invalid (SafeOS ≠ RUN) Check POWERLINK cabling and that every safety node is powered and in RUN; verify node configuration CRCs
CPU STATUS LED blinks 0.5 Hz orange SafeDESIGNER is in Debug / STOP mode Exit Debug, switch application to RUN, or store a RUN project to the SafeKEY
STATUS LED blinks 1 Hz orange at power-up No application stored on SafeKEY Download safety project, or insert the correct SafeKEY dongle, then reset
SafePLC cannot be reached from Automation Studio Controller is booting / updating or IO power missing Wait until boot LEDs finish, check X2X supply, confirm the CPU is not in firmware-update mode
PowerLINK LED red; safe nodes offline Network cable / topology fault Inspect RJ45 & hub wiring, replace damaged cable, verify ring/line topology
SKEY LED blinks orange continuously Repeated SafeKEY access – dongle loose Reseat SafeKEY, inspect contacts; if worn, replace SafeKEY and reload licence
Module overheats (> 70 °C) → “Temp !!!” on text display Ambient temp too high, vent slots blocked Improve cabinet ventilation; if optional clip-on fan is fitted, verify airflow
24 V LED off / spontaneous resets Logic supply < 20.4 V or noisy PSU Adjust 24 V PSU, separate safety CPU feed from inductive loads, add ferrite
