Product Description:
The X20SL8100 module is manufactured by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. It functions as a safety controller that hosts certified logic to monitor emergency stops, light curtains, and safety relays across a POWERLINK network. This allows hazardous motion to be shut down in a controlled manner while related machine sections remain synchronized during a stop. The unit is intended for automated equipment that requires centralized safety logic without moving those decisions to a separate cabinet controller.
Internally, the unit is identified as the controller type Safety Controller, and its logic and diagnostic data are stored on a removable SafeKEY so programs can be transferred without a computer. Operation is powered from a nominal bus of 24 VDC, and the electronics consume only 4.3 W. Communication with the machine network is handled through 1 POWERLINK interface. The unit also provides 2 integrated hub ports for line or ring wiring, and the node operates as a controlled node within the POWERLINK hierarchy for predictable data exchange. Because the power supply module is included, no additional backplane segment is required for this controller.
The controller maintains correct function up to 2000 m operating altitude and in environments with relative humidity up to 95%, provided the air remains non-condensing. It can be mounted in either horizontal or vertical orientation without derating, which helps when cabinet space is limited or cable routing is constrained. An integrated Opensafety gateway forwards certified safety telegrams between standard and safe segments, allowing the same hardware to bridge traditional POWERLINK cells with safety devices. Continuous operation at these limits depends on the specified supply, load, and condensation conditions.
