The X20SLX402 safety I/O slice is manufactured by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Classified as a safe digital mixed module, it combines fail-safe inputs and outputs in a 12.5 mm housing that plugs directly into an X20 backplane. Within an industrial automation system, the unit gathers status information from interlocks and light curtains while issuing shutoff commands to final elements such as contactors or valve coils. Its role is to enforce functional safety at the machine level without requiring a separate hardwired relay panel.
The time from detection to de-energization of the output switching device is rated at <10 µs, so category-based stop functions can satisfy stringent response limits. Each high-side channel can deliver up to 0.2 A, which is sufficient to drive pilot relays or optically isolated indicators. All outputs operate from a nominal field potential of 24 VDC, simplifying power distribution because sensors and actuators share the same supply. The module has 4 safe digital inputs that accept dual-channel devices or individual contacts. It also has 2 independent safe digital outputs that provide redundant disabling paths through internally cross-monitored MOSFETs. Continuous diagnostics on every channel detect shorts to voltage or ground and trigger an automatic shutdown.
The module’s pulse generator section issues sensor test signals and is categorized as Safe Type B2, ensuring that switching elements are checked during every cycle. Incoming field signals are evaluated according to Safe Type A rules, permitting a straightforward connection to mechanical contacts that lack built-in feedback. Safety communication is handled over openSAFETY, and the network topology allows up to 10 participating safe nodes on a single segment while maintaining synchronization with the standard X20 bus. In addition, four pulse outputs support encoder plausibility checks. Four SafeMOTION axes receive speed or stop commands over the same deterministic channel without requiring separate wiring.
