Sanyo Denki STEP-SYN stepping motors provide controlled incremental movement for positioning, indexing, feeding, and repetitive machine motion. These 2-phase motors are available with a 1.8° basic step angle, equivalent to 200 full steps per mechanical revolution. Frame sizes range from compact 50 mm square motors to high-torque 106 mm configurations.
Available STEP-SYN designs include unipolar and bipolar windings, single- and dual-shaft arrangements, lead-wire and connector connections, and multiple current ratings within the same motor family. Holding torque, winding resistance, winding inductance, rotor inertia, body length, and mass vary by configuration. Motors with similar external dimensions are not necessarily electrically or mechanically interchangeable.
How Sanyo Denki STEP-SYN Motors Work
A STEP-SYN stepping motor moves according to the sequence in which its two phases are switched by the connected drive. Each full electrical step produces a fixed 1.8° movement at the motor shaft. This incremental operating method allows the drive to command repeatable angular movement for automated positioning and indexing.
Holding torque is produced with both phases energized while the shaft is stationary. Rated phase current, winding resistance, and winding inductance determine the motor’s electrical requirements. These values can differ substantially between motors with the same frame size and holding-torque rating, making the complete product number essential when selecting a replacement. Rotor inertia, motor mass, and body length generally increase with the available torque. STEP-SYN motors can also use single or dual shafts, permanently attached lead wires, or detachable connector systems.

Standard 1.8° STEP-SYN Stepping Motors
The 50 mm square STEP-SYN range provides compact 1.8° motors with unipolar or bipolar windings and lead-wire connections. Holding-torque ratings range from 0.28 to 0.53 N·m, while rated-current options extend from 1 to 3 A per phase. The smaller configurations are suitable for machines with limited mounting space and moderate torque requirements. Motor length ranges from 39.8 to 55.8 mm, and mass ranges from 0.35 to 0.55 kg. Rotor inertia increases from 0.057 to 0.14 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m² across the available motor lengths.
Product Number | Winding and Connection | Holding Torque | Rated Current | Resistance / Inductance |
Unipolar, lead wire | 0.28 N·m | 1 A/phase | 4.3 Ω / 6.8 mH per phase
Unipolar, lead wire | 0.49 N·m | 2 A/phase | 1.6 Ω / 3.2 mH per phase
Unipolar, lead wire | 0.53 N·m | 3 A/phase | 0.9 Ω / 1.7 mH per phase |
56 mm STEP-SYN Stepping Motors
The 56 mm square STEP-SYN range offers higher torque and a broader selection of motor lengths. Unipolar configurations provide holding torque from 0.39 to 1.27 N·m, while bipolar versions extend from 0.55 to 2.0 N·m. All configurations use a 1.8° basic step angle. Motor lengths range from 41.8 to 94.8 mm, while mass ranges from 0.47 to 1.3 kg. Rotor inertia extends from 0.1 to 0.49 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m². Available customization options include hollow shafts, shaft modifications, decelerators, and encoders, depending on the motor configuration.
Product Number | Winding and Connection | Holding Torque | Rated Current | Resistance / Inductance |
Unipolar, lead wire | 0.83 N·m | 1 A/phase | 6.7 Ω / 15 mH per phase
Unipolar, lead wire | 1.27 N·m | 2 A/phase | 2.0 Ω / 4.5 mH per phase
Unipolar, lead wire | 1.27 N·m | 3 A/phase | 0.9 Ω / 2.2 mH per phase |
60 mm STEP-SYN Stepping Motors
The 60 mm square STEP-SYN range includes unipolar and bipolar windings with either connector or lead-wire connections. Connector-type motors support detachable motor cables, while lead-wire configurations provide permanently attached electrical connections. Certain lead-wire versions use a 47.14 mm mounting pitch interchangeable with NEMA 23 mounting dimensions. Holding torque ranges from 0.78 N·m in shorter unipolar motors to 2.7 N·m in longer bipolar configurations. Rated-current options include 1, 2, 3, and 4 A per phase. Motor mass ranges from 0.6 to 1.34 kg, and rotor inertia ranges from 0.275 to 0.84 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m².
Product Number | Winding and Connection | Holding Torque | Rated Current | Resistance / Inductance |
Unipolar, connector | 2.1 N·m | 3 A/phase | 1.25 Ω / 2.4 mH per phase
Bipolar, connector | 2.7 N·m | 4 A/phase | 0.65 Ω / 2.4 mH per phase
Bipolar, connector | 2.7 N·m | 2 A/phase | 2.4 Ω / 9.5 mH per phase |
86 mm STEP-SYN Stepping Motors
The 86 mm STEP-SYN motors are higher-torque, bipolar, lead-wire configurations with a 1.8° step angle. The available versions operate at 6 A per phase and provide holding-torque ratings of 2.74, 5.09, or 7.44 N·m. These motors are suited to axes requiring more holding force than the smaller square-frame models can provide. Motor length increases from 62 to 125.9 mm across the three configurations. Mass ranges from 1.5 to 3.5 kg, while rotor inertia increases from 1.45 to 4.4 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m². The winding resistance and inductance also change with the motor stack, even though all three versions share the same phase-current rating.
Product Number | Winding and Connection | Holding Torque | Rated Current | Resistance / Inductance |
Bipolar, lead wire, CE | 2.74 N·m | 6 A/phase | 0.30 Ω / 1.65 mH per phase
Bipolar, lead wire, CE | 5.09 N·m | 6 A/phase | 0.35 Ω / 2.7 mH per phase
Bipolar, lead wire, CE | 7.44 N·m | 6 A/phase | 0.45 Ω / 3.4 mH per phase |
106 mm STEP-SYN Stepping Motors
The 106 mm STEP-SYN range provides the highest holding-torque ratings in this group. Unipolar and bipolar lead-wire configurations are available with 1.8° step angles and holding torque from 10.8 to 19 N·m. Rated-current requirements are 4 or 6 A per phase, depending on the winding. The shorter 106 mm motors have a length of 163.3 mm, a mass of 7.5 kg, and rotor inertia of 14.6 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m². Longer configurations measure 221.3 mm, weigh 10.5 kg, and have rotor inertia of 22 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m². The mounting surface and available installation depth must accommodate these larger mechanical dimensions.
