Product Description:

The AX8810-0000-0000, chassis number type is a capacitor module which is meant for increasing the amount of DC link capacitance in Beckhoff servo drive systems. This module is very important in helping the DC link by capturing and cooling voltage spikes caused during motor braking therefore improving overall energy efficiency. Since temporary power is also connected to the motor in case of any interruptions, this regenerative energy is stored in the AX8810 thus limiting the need of the use of brake resistors. This does not only result in the reduction of unnecessary power losses but also leads to a decrease in the overall connected load thus enhancing power usage and the chances of downsizing of fuses.

When using the AX8810, one of the most attractive advantages is its energy efficiency saving potential where frequent brake cycles are required. It makes it possible to activate the brake resistors less frequently thus enabling a constructive distribution of the energies to be captured thereby making the energy consumption of the multi axes systems. The capacity module is rated for use in DC link voltage of 848 V DC, which means it can be utilized for high voltage applications.

The first step in installing and configuring most devices is the use of the TwinCAT 3 Drive Manager 2, which provides a convenient interface for the configuration of the module. At the same time, it is possible to use the TwinCAT 3 Safety Editor TE9000 and TwinSAFE Loader/User TE9200 in order to carry out all projects that are safety relevant. In terms of physical dimensions, the AX8810 measures height 230 mm, depth 192 mm and width 60 mm which is small enough to be integrated in the present systems. Since it has an IP20 protection class, it is suitable for use in general industrial conditions within a temperature range of 0 to 40oC; it can go up to 50oC provided power is reduced.

Symptom / LED or drive alarm Likely root cause Corrective Action
PWR LED dark; no start-up 24 V DC supply absent or wired to the wrong pins Measure supply, check cabinet fuse and X01 pin-out
PWR/⚡ symbol flashes red fast DC-link is > 48 V while an error is pending (over-voltage during braking)  Wait for voltage to drop; lengthen decel ramps or add AX8820 regen unit
PWR/⚡ symbol flashes red slow DC-link still charged (> 48 V) after mains off; bleed time too long  Verify brake-chopper path, connect external resistor if required
Drives trip to DC-bus over-voltage (F8xx) when axes brake hard AX8810 fully charged; not enough buffer or regen capability Add a second AX8810 or fit an AX8820, soften braking ramps
Repeated under-voltage trips when enabling drives AX8810 not seen in the DC-link (link cable or fuse open) Inspect AX-Bridge bars, measure capacitance via scope, replace blown fuse
DC-link fails to charge on cold start; supply modules show “Capacitance exceeded” Total µF in link is above power-supply limit  Remove surplus AX8810/axis modules or upgrade to AX8640/AX8600
AX8810 runs hot (> 55 °C ambient) Cabinet temperature too high; convection blocked Improve ventilation, leave 25 mm clearance top/bottom, derate per manual
Audible hum / bulging housing after years of operation Electrolytic capacitors aged Schedule replacement module; verify ripple current against drive duty
Ground-fault test on DC-link fails Insulation breakdown inside module or wiring Megger cables, isolate AX8810; replace if leakage > 5 MΩ
AX8810 not recognised by TwinCAT diagnostics Device-ID jumper or EtherCAT address unset Re-seat AX-Bridge ID jumpers; cycle power and rescan bus
