The AX2003 is a cabinet-mounted servo drive built by Beckhoff for the AX Digital Servo Drives series. It rectifies incoming three-phase power and delivers controlled AC power to compatible servomotors, providing precise torque, velocity, and position control in automated machinery. Beckhoff equips the unit with protective relays and feedback interfaces so it can operate as the power stage between a motion controller and the motor. The drive handles the rapid current changes demanded by packaging lines, pick-and-place axes, and gantry systems.
The drive supplies a continuous phase current of 3 A RMS and tolerates short bursts of up to 6 A RMS for acceleration or shock loads. These current ratings accompany an installed load of 2 kVA, indicating the transformer or circuit breaker capacity that must be reserved in the cabinet. Internal braking energy is dissipated by a resistor rated at 80 W; once that limit is reached, excess energy is routed to an external braking resistor. Power dissipation reaches 40 W at rated current, while the electronics draw only 15 W of power during standby operation. Output current has a form factor of 1.01, and voltage loss across the inverter transistors is limited to a residual 5 V, helping preserve motor torque at low speeds. The input stage presents an impedance of 20 kΩ relative to analog ground, reducing the electrical load on upstream signal sources.
Motor selection must account for a maximum load inductance of 75 mH and a minimum load inductance of 12 mH to maintain current-loop stability. The BTB/RTO relay can switch 500 mA for status reporting to safety interlocks and other control circuits. The enclosure measures 100 mm wide, 265 mm deep, and 275 mm high, providing a compact rectangular footprint for cabinet installation. The unit weighs 5 kg, which should be considered when selecting the mounting surface and fasteners. During operation, the metal enclosure dissipates heat through natural convection.
