B&R Automation's X20BC00E3 module belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series and acts as a gateway between distributed I/O slices and controller networks. Within an X20 rack, it collects sensor states and forwards actuator commands so higher-level PLCs can coordinate machine functions over standard Ethernet. The unit mounts on a DIN rail next to power supplies and slice controllers, providing deterministic exchange cycles typical of real-time Ethernet systems. This layout supports modular expansion in packaging lines, conveyors, and assembly cells where local I/O must remain closely coupled to the control network.
The housing is 75 mm deep, 37.5 mm wide, and 99 mm high, allowing the device to fit inside shallow cabinets while leaving space for front cabling. Communication is handled through PROFINET IO, letting controllers perform cyclic data exchange with real-time Ethernet timing. Two shielded network paths are present, and both are accessible through 2 integrated RJ45 connectors, so adjacent devices can remain linked in a compact line topology. Because only one fieldbus interface is integrated, the communication path remains focused on a single network role rather than dividing resources across multiple protocols.
Power and backplane identification are established through a 24 VDC keying voltage that prevents insertion of incompatible bases. Network distribution is aided by the module's integrated 2-port switch, so line topologies remain intact even when the unit is removed under power. I/O slices connect through 12 coded terminal pins that carry supply and signal buses, while the defined 1 fieldbus channel keeps network exchange direct and organized. This arrangement helps the rack maintain a clear separation between network traffic, slice interconnection, and local power distribution.
