The KEB COMBIVERT F5 series combines open-loop frequency inverters, closed-loop drive controllers, and servo-capable configurations within one modular platform. The series covers power ratings from 0.37 kW to 900 kW and includes 230 V, 400 V, and 690 V classes. Available configurations support asynchronous motors, synchronous motors, sensorless operation, encoder feedback, speed and torque control, positioning, and application-specific drive functions.
Understanding the KEB COMBIVERT F5 Platform
The F5 platform includes several control levels. F5 Basic and F5 Compact are primarily configured for open-loop motor control, while F5 Multi adds closed-loop control, encoder feedback, positioning, and synchronous motor capability. Specialized Application, SCL, and ASCL configurations extend the platform for machine-specific functions or sensorless closed-loop operation.
This distinction is important when identifying a replacement. Two F5 controllers with similar power ratings may have different control boards, encoder interfaces, I/O arrangements, cooling systems, or installed accessories. The complete type code must be matched rather than selecting a replacement from motor power alone.
F5 configuration | Control capability | Power range | Key hardware and functions |
F5 Basic | Open-loop control | 0.37 to 15 kW | KEB-SMM sensorless motor management, 17 control terminals, five digital inputs, one analog input, and eight parameter sets |
F5 Compact | Enhanced open-loop control | 0.37 to 90 kW | 29 control terminals, eight digital inputs, two analog inputs, transistor and relay outputs, and AC or DC supply connection |
F5 Multi | Open-loop and closed-loop control | 0.75 to 900 kW | Asynchronous and synchronous motor control, modular feedback cards, speed control, torque control, positioning, and electronic gearing |
F5 Application | Customized hardware or software | Configuration dependent | Machine sequences, adapted serial protocols, spindle-drive software, specialized cooling, and customer-specific functions |
F5-E / F5-P | Sensorless closed-loop synchronous motor control | Configuration dependent | SCL operation without rotor-position feedback for applications that do not require positioning |
F5-H / F5-L | Sensorless closed-loop asynchronous motor control | Configuration dependent | ASCL operation without encoder feedback, automatic motor adaptation, and closed-loop-style load response |
F5 Basic Drive Controllers
F5 Basic controllers provide open-loop control for machines that do not require motor-position feedback. The series supports 230 V and 400 V supply classes, including AC or DC supply arrangements depending on the exact configuration. KEB-SMM sensorless motor management controls motor speed without a feedback device.
The Basic control board has 17 pluggable terminals, five programmable digital inputs, one analog input, two relay outputs, and one programmable analog output. Eight parameter sets can store S-curves, acceleration and deceleration ramps, DC braking, PID control, motor protection, brake control, timers, counters, and energy-saving settings. Control-terminal and serial-interface scanning occurs every 2 ms.
F5 Compact Drive Controllers
F5 Compact expands the open-loop platform with additional I/O and a broader power range. The Compact series covers 230 V and 400 V classes and supports either AC or DC connection where specified by the exact type code. Its KEB-SMM control algorithm provides sensorless regulation of three-phase motors.
The Compact control board provides 29 pluggable terminals, eight digital inputs, two analog inputs, two transistor outputs, two relay outputs, and two analog outputs. PNP and NPN control logic can be selected. F5 Compact also provides eight programmable parameter sets, controlled positioning to an end position or counter pulse, DC-link connections, braking control, and switching frequencies up to 16 kHz. Output frequency extends to 800 Hz, with configurations available up to 1600 Hz.
F5 Multi Closed-Loop Controllers
F5 Multi retains the functions of the Compact platform while adding closed-loop control for asynchronous and synchronous motors. Plug-in feedback cards support resolver, incremental, Sin/Cos, absolute, Hiperface, EnDat, BiSS, SSI, HTL, TTL, UVW, and tacho-based feedback configurations.
Multi controllers support speed and torque control, position control, electronic gearing, and synchronous speed control. Extended functions include relative and absolute positioning, reference routines, rotary-table positioning, external-encoder positioning, programmable gear ratios, positional synchronization, and torque-mode operation. Position values use 32-bit resolution, and supported configurations can store up to 32 positions internally.

F5 Power, Enclosure, and Cooling Options
F5 controllers are generally supplied as IP20 chassis units for protected control-cabinet installation. Standard operating temperature is -10 to 45 degrees Celsius, with storage from -25 to 70 degrees Celsius. Large 400 V units beginning at 90 kW and 690 V configurations have an operating range of -10 to 40 degrees Celsius. Available thermal and installation arrangements include standard heat-sink cooling, flat-rear mounting, liquid cooling, and external-heat designs. The housing letter determines the controller footprint and which cooling arrangements are available.
Installation version | Technical arrangement |
Standard IP20 chassis | Universal mounting inside a protected control cabinet |
Factory-mounted interference filter | Adds unit-level interference suppression |
Factory-mounted braking resistor | Absorbs pulse energy without requiring a separate mounting location |
Flat Rear, FR | Transfers heat directly into an external cooling surface |
Liquid Cooled, LC | Uses liquid cooling for power-stage heat removal |
External Heat, EH | Places the heat sink through the mounting surface to separate power-stage heat from the cabinet |
Customer cabinet version | Complete cabinet configurations with IP54 protection |
Feedback and Encoder Systems
F5 Multi encoder cards can provide two feedback channels. The first channel can be configured for TTL, HTL, resolver, Sin/Cos, EnDat, Hiperface, SSI-Sin/Cos, UVW, or other supported feedback formats. The second channel can provide an encoder input, encoder-emulation output, SSI input, tacho input, or initiator input depending on the installed card.
Feedback configuration directly affects motor compatibility and control performance. A controller equipped for resolver feedback cannot automatically replace a Hiperface, EnDat, or incremental-encoder configuration. The connection type, channel function, encoder supply, and control software must all be checked.
F5 Operators and Parameter Management
COMBIVIS 6 provides PC-based parameter management for the F5 platform. It can display and adjust parameters across eight sets, monitor physical and operating values, configure the customer-accessible CP parameter level, and observe drive-to-control communication during fieldbus operation.
An optional LCD operator provides a six-language plain-text display. Complete parameter settings can be stored in internal flash memory or on an SD/MMC memory card. A digital operator is also available for local or remote display and keyboard operation.
Product | F5 configuration | Input and nominal power | Rated / maximum current | Nominal / maximum switching frequency | Housing and dimensions |
Multi platform, A1 configuration | 3-phase 400 V AC/DC; 0.75 kW | 2.6 / 4.7 A | 8 / 16 kHz | D; 90 x 250 x 181 mm
Multi platform, A1 configuration | 3-phase 400 V AC/DC; 15 kW | 33 / 49.5 A | 2 / 16 kHz | E; 130 x 290 x 208 mm
Compact, C0 configuration | 3-phase 230 V AC, 180 to 260 V range; 22 kW | 100 / 180 A | 8 kHz | R; 340 x 520 x 355 mm |
Serial and Fieldbus Communication
F5 communication is configured through plug-in operator modules. The operator module must be identified separately from the drive power stage when selecting a replacement. Available interfaces include:
- RS-232/485 using the open KEB protocol
- Profibus
- InterBus
- CANopen
- DeviceNet
- Modbus
- Ethernet
- EtherCAT
- Powerlink
- Profinet
- EtherNet/IP
Several operator modules also provide an HSP5 service interface for parameter access and commissioning. Matching the drive controller without matching the communication operator can prevent the replacement from connecting to the existing PLC or control network.
F5 Diagnostic Message Categories
The F5 display distinguishes errors, malfunctions, and operating-status messages.
Message category | Display format | Controller response |
Error | Begins with E. | Modulation is switched off immediately; restart is possible only after a reset |
Malfunction | Begins with A. | The response varies according to the malfunction and drive configuration |
Status | No prefix | Indicates the current operating condition, such as standstill or constant forward operation |
