Pacific Scientific manufactures the OC950-504-01 option card as part of the OC950 Option Cards series. The plug-in module slides into compatible drive or controller racks to add configurable digital inputs and outputs, along with a proprietary PacLAN communication link. In industrial automation, it connects sensors, solenoids, and motion axes on packaging or material-handling machines, letting the host controller exchange real-time status bits and commands without separate I/O boards or standalone gateways.

The card provides 21 bidirectional channels that can be programmed individually as inputs or as open-drain outputs. Input lines include a 10 kΩ pull-up to +12 VDC so dry contacts sit at a defined logic high until activated. When configured as outputs, an onboard open-drain DMOS stage can sink up to 100 mA per point while tolerating a maximum logic level of 40 V, permitting direct drive of relays or indicator lamps. A 100 µs RC filter on every channel suppresses contact bounce and high-frequency noise. Communication to the host network is handled through the included PacLAN port that streams telegrams at 2.5 MBaud. With a supported segment length of 305 m, the bus can carry deterministic I/O data alongside RS-232 or RS-485 service channels used for setup and diagnostics.

Application firmware and machine parameters are stored in 128kx8 NVRAM, and the memory keeps its contents for 10 years without external power, eliminating the need for periodic battery replacement. Each PacLAN segment can host up to 8 stations, and the final node must present a terminating resistor of 93 Ω to prevent signal reflections. All logic circuitry is powered from the controller’s user rail specified at 5 VDC ±5%; the card draws up to 200 mA, leaving headroom for additional modules while maintaining stable bus timing.
