Pacific Scientific manufactures the 6440-001-K-N as part of the 6410 Stepper Drives series. This single-axis stepper drive and indexer converts fixed-frequency mains power into regulated DC power and chopped current waveforms that advance two-phase motors by commanded step counts. It is used in automated pick-and-place stations, labeling heads, and small gantries where precise incremental positioning is needed. The integrated indexing capability allows stored motion sequences to run without requiring a separate motion controller for every command.
Internally, a chopper stage operates at 20 kHz, allowing the drive to regulate coil current with low audible noise and fine ripple control. The power section accepts a nominal input of 120/240 VAC and can deliver up to 5 A RMS per phase while maintaining an adequate thermal margin. For short acceleration periods, the current limit rises to 7.1 A peak. Motion resolution is selectable, and the highest setting of 51,200 steps per revolution supports microstepping, while a native resolution of 200 steps per revolution is also available. Configuration data are stored in 64 bytes of fast scratch memory, and 1,792 bytes of program memory hold step sequences that can be executed after power-up. Command messages arrive through an asynchronous serial port operating at 9,600 bps. These communication and memory resources allow the drive to receive direct positioning instructions and retain programmed motion routines.
The drive’s auxiliary interface supports AC mains frequencies of 50/60 Hz, allowing installation on commonly used domestic and international power systems without an additional frequency converter. The J6 port provides a 66 VDC motor supply rated at 4.6 A for connected equipment. Its digital outputs can sink up to 70 mA for indicator lamps or optically isolated inputs. Total power consumption remains within a 300 W limit, which is suitable for many NEMA 23 or NEMA 34 motor applications. A variable resolution setting of 20,000 pulses per revolution offers a balance between step rate and positioning granularity during high-throughput operation. The 6410 architecture routes control power separately from the motor power circuitry. Low-voltage inputs have a 30 VDC maximum to protect the microcontroller and memory circuits from excessive voltage.
