The 6410-001 stepper motor drive is produced by Pacific Scientific as part of the 6410 Stepper Drives series. It is an indexer-type current chopper that converts incoming step and direction pulses into regulated phase currents, allowing open-loop positioning of two-phase hybrid stepper motors in assembly, packaging, and metrology equipment. By regulating coil current rather than supply voltage, the unit delivers consistent torque across a wide speed range and provides an interface between low-level motion commands and the power stage required by the motor.
Torque ripple is managed by a switching frequency of 20 kHz, which keeps acoustic output low and limits current ripple. The factory microstep table is set to 1/25 of a full step, giving 0.36° increments on 1.8° motors. Default pulse throughput reaches 500 kHz, and the internal counter accepts bursts up to 2 MHz when input filtering is bypassed. Resolution options include 51 200 binary steps per revolution or 50,000 decimal steps, so either coding scheme can be used. After 0.1 seconds of inactivity, the drive trims phase current to 50 percent, limiting heat while maintaining holding torque. Rated continuous phase current is adjustable from 0.625 A to 5.0 A RMS to match different motor windings.
The power section can deliver a peak phase magnitude of 7.1 A, enabling acceleration of mid-size NEMA 34 stacks without rotor stall. Thermal management is aided by a compact extruded housing that measures 82.55 mm deep, 39.62 mm wide, and 104.90 mm high, and the small footprint permits stacking multiple axes on a single panel. At only 1.0 lb, installation does not require additional bracing, yet the unit is rated for a chassis temperature ceiling of 60 °C, so forced airflow may be necessary in enclosed cabinets. The housing can be mounted in dense control panels where several drives share the same backplate.
