The MIV0303-1-B5 is an inverter module built by Okuma as part of the MIV Servo Drives series. It operates between the NC controller and the armature windings of synchronous or induction motors in automated machine tools. The module converts DC bus energy into three-phase, variable-frequency power for controlling motor speed and torque. Its dual-axis arrangement allows one module to operate two machine functions from a shared power system while maintaining separate output control for each connected motor.
The control electronics use an ICB1 inverter control board to process command pulses and generate carrier-based pulse-width modulation patterns for the output stages. The module is compatible with either a BL motor or a PREX motor. These Okuma motor families use different rotor designs but share compatible feedback signaling, allowing the inverter to operate either family when the appropriate motor parameters are selected. The L-side output is rated at 4 hp (3.0 kW), providing power for rapid positioning of a turret, tool changer, or small spindle. A heat sink and fan assembly remove heat from the switching components during sustained operation.
The M-side output provides matching drive capability for a secondary axis, giving the module a symmetrical dual-axis arrangement without requiring an additional inverter. Internally, insulated-gate power modules switch each output leg at high frequency to maintain sinusoidal motor current when both channels are operating. The two outputs provide a combined 6 kW total capacity when loaded to their continuous ratings. Front-panel diagnostic LEDs indicate DC bus voltage, gate activity, and overtemperature conditions, allowing faults to be identified without opening the enclosure. When installed as an inverter unit beside the power supply section, the module participates in the regenerative circuit that directs excess kinetic energy from decelerating axes back to the common DC link.
