Okuma Corporation’s E4809-022-A is a rapid-response absolute encoder, manufactured and commercialized under Okuma’s machinery works series. It boasts a traditional cylindrical design and consists of multiple layers for converting a mechanical signal into an electrical signal. Motor encoders such as the E4809-022-A are one of the most revolutionary products ever invented for industrial automation. With the use of motor encoders, it is possible to track critical motor parameters such as speed, position, and torque. For servo applications, these parameters are important and usually serve as the basis for adjustments and corrections. Alongside the servo amplifier and motor, absolute encoders such as the E4809-022-A form a closed-loop control system.
As an absolute encoder, the E4809-022-A has the capability to determine the exact position and speed of the motor shaft during operation. Absolute encoders assign a particular value to the possible angular positions of the shaft. Since the positions are digitally coded, the encoder can determine the precise location of the shaft at any point in time. In general, absolute encoders such as the E4809-022-A are preferable over incremental encoders for position-sensitive applications. Incremental encoders, on the other hand, track the shaft position by monitoring the angular shift of a particular point in the shaft with respect to a starting point and reference time.
