The BDU-80A is a servo amplifier from the BDU Servomotor Drives series manufactured by Okuma. As a single-axis module, it conditions three-phase power and converts controller commands into current suited for the brushless servo motor assigned to the axis. Within an automation cell, the drive forms the electrical interface between the motion controller and the machine mechanics, supplying regulated torque, monitoring speed, and forwarding high-resolution position data back to the CNC or PLC for closed-loop control.
At the hardware level, the amplifier follows a Base + BDC + SVC architecture; the base stage handles power switching, the BDC section manages the DC link, and the SVC card processes servo control algorithms. Motion commands arrive over the Digital RCON bus, so binary data rather than analog voltage determines speed and torque references, which improves noise immunity. Incoming energy is provided by a three-phase 220 VAC supply routed through the PCB backplane. To limit fault currents, the unit uses three glass fuses, each rated at AC 200V 2A. These protective elements are glass-tube-filled and clear quickly under short-circuit conditions.
A direct feedback loop is supported by a direct-coupled encoder connection, eliminating belts or gears that could introduce backlash. Position data is generated by a high-resolution OSP encoder, so the controller receives fine incremental counts for precise contouring, while simultaneous speed information supports motor speed and position feedback. Diagnostic visibility is improved through a front panel that shows the operating state with 6 red, 3 orange, and 1 green LEDs. An additional bank of 10 SVC LEDs indicates control-loop status. One brushless servo motor is driven per amplifier, matching the current capacity and thermal design to a single axis.
