Product Description:
The SS2000MD4-M is a stepper motor drive produced by Kollmorgen for the SS2000 SLO-SYN Drives series. The unit converts controller pulse trains into phase currents so a connected hybrid stepper can index with up to 20,000 pulses per revolution, giving precise incremental motion in pick-and-place, labeling, or small gantry axes. By providing microstepped outputs instead of full steps, the drive reduces vibration and improves positioning accuracy over conventional open-loop methods encountered in compact automation equipment.
The drive’s input section accepts a direct-current supply between 24 Vdc and 40 Vdc, letting it share the same low-voltage bus as sensors and small servos. A front-panel selector sets motor phase current up to 3.5 A, which establishes the available torque while limiting copper heating. Control logic processes step commands at rates as high as 500 kHz, and each pulse must stay high for at least 1 µs to be recognized. Command throughput is matched by an internal response time of 50 µs; coupled with a maximum pulse density of 20,000 per revolution, this supports fine-resolution indexing. The electronics are sized for stepper windings with a minimum inductance of 0.5 mH, preventing saturation when current changes rapidly.
The module dissipates 35 W under worst-case switching, so the heat sink must remain below 70 °C while ambient air can be as high as 50 °C. When supply and command limits are fully utilized, the connected motor can reach 3,000 rpm, covering fast indexing duties for small conveyors. The aluminum chassis measures 4.13 in wide, 3.25 in deep, and 1.56 in high yet weighs only 0.6 lb, making it suitable for back-panel or DIN-plate installation beside PLC I/O. Compact dimensions help maintain airflow in crowded enclosures while keeping wiring runs short between drive and motor.
