The SS2000M-D4 is a microstepping drive from Kollmorgen and belongs to the SS2000 SLO-SYN Drives series. The unit is a bipolar PWM current amplifier that converts step-and-direction pulses into controlled two-phase winding currents for hybrid stepper motors. Within industrial automation, it provides electronic commutation so machines can index, feed, or scan with repeatable accuracy while eliminating the mechanical wear associated with cam drives and gearboxes.
Internally, the drive’s pulse generator accepts incoming step commands up to 500 kHz, so controllers can issue high-resolution motion profiles without missed increments. At its finest setting, the drive divides each full step into 1/100 step, yielding as many as 20,000 discrete microsteps per shaft revolution. This granularity improves low-speed smoothness and positioning accuracy. The power stage can deliver up to 3.5 A of peak phase current and is rated for motors with inductance as low as 0.5 mH, permitting the use of smaller, high-torque hybrid stacks without excessive current-rise stress. Pulse inputs require a minimum width of 1 µs and are optically isolated at 16 mA to protect PLC outputs.
To reduce idle heating, the drive automatically drops phase current to 50% once motion stops, cutting the thermal load on both the electronics and the motor. Even during continuous operation, its worst-case dissipation stays within 35 W, allowing convection cooling inside compact enclosures that measure 4.13 inches wide, 3.25 inches deep, and 1.56 inches high. With adequate bus voltage, the controlled axis can reach 3,000 rpm, meeting throughput needs in light-duty material handling. Mechanical installation is simplified by a mass of only 0.6 lb, and the module secures directly to panel standoffs.
