Kollmorgen's SERVOSTAR SP is a digital servo drive belonging to the SP Servostar Servo Drives series. The unit interfaces between a machine controller and a rotary or linear servomotor, regulating torque, speed, and position in automated lines, packaging machines, or material-handling cells. By combining power electronics with signal processing in a compact module, it provides the commanded current to the motor while supervising system health and coordinating motion with upstream PLC logic. The design supports centralized control while keeping motor response closely aligned with changing command profiles.

The drive is qualified for installation up to 3300 ft above sea level and withstands mechanical excitation up to 0.5 g, supporting use on mezzanines or mobile frames. Motion is possible in all four quadrants, so it handles motoring and regenerative braking during bidirectional moves. Current ratings are stated on an RMS basis, and a form factor of 1.01 or less indicates little peak-to-average distortion under sinusoidal loading. The command interface accepts a differential analog input powered by a ±15 Vdc supply, providing noise immunity for velocity or torque references. Internal logic circuits draw only 0.2 A from a dedicated 8 Vdc rail that may vary by ±5% without functional loss. Three selectable operating modes, velocity, torque, and position, can be toggled in software, while an over-voltage trip level of 430 Vdc protects the power stage from excess bus energy.

Remote enable circuitry simplifies safety wiring; a command loop drawing 20 mA recognizes drive-ready when the incoming voltage rises above 10 V and disables the power stage when it falls below 1 V. Six front-panel status LEDs present immediate feedback for power, fault, and communication states, providing a quick visual indication of operating condition. Because the enable input is separate from the command reference, the controller can inhibit output without changing the analog setpoint source. This discrete I/O path complements the drive's software-selectable modes and helps protect against unintended starts during operation.
