Product Description:

The SMC-401-PS is a stepper motor drive from Kollmorgen's SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. It commands compatible stepper motors in industrial automation, delivering indexed positioning and velocity profiles for machine axes. This stand-alone module manages power conversion, logic processing, and field wiring so that controllers can execute repeatable moves without dedicated motion cards. Its integrated processing supports motion sequences without requiring a separate motion-control board in the host system.

It operates with a bus voltage of 45 VDC, which provides the maximum DC link available for coil energization and affects the upper speed limit of attached motors. The programmable current loop can supply up to 4 A per phase, allowing the output to match the motor rating while minimizing heat. Command and handshake signals use TTL ground-seeking logic, allowing direct connection to low-level PLC I/O. Communications for parameter entry and diagnostic readback are handled over RS-232C, so a standard serial port is sufficient for setup. The step generator drives the outputs through an open-collector topology, enabling selection of pull-up levels that suit the field voltage. The controller also provides four general-purpose inputs, four general-purpose outputs, three motion-status inputs, and one busy output bit for sequence control.

For multi-axis installations, a ribbon cable can link up to 8 drives in a daisy chain, allowing a single host port to coordinate synchronized moves. The unit supports two-phase stepper motors and can be switched between full-step or half-step resolution to balance torque smoothness against step frequency. Two #10 clearance mounting holes secure the housing inside the control cabinet. The enclosure measures 165.1 mm wide, 139.7 mm high, and 88.9 mm deep. These dimensions support installation in compact control cabinets while preserving space for cable routing and connector access.
