The SMC-401 is a stepper motor drive from Kollmorgen built for the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. It interfaces directly with two-phase stepper motors to execute indexing, velocity, and homing moves required in automated pick-and-place stations, small gantries, and packaging axes. By combining power electronics, motion sequencing, and machine I/O in one compact module, the unit removes the need for separate controllers and simplifies integration inside control panels.
Serial communication is handled through an RS-232C port that accepts ASCII commands issued from a PLC or PC. Local machine signaling is provided by four inputs, four outputs, and one busy signal, so sensors can start moves and downstream devices can track motion completion. Internally, a bipolar chopper driver regulates winding current; this topology minimizes power loss while maintaining torque over a broad speed range. Peak phase current is programmable up to 4 A, matching the requirements of medium-frame hybrid motors. Step resolution can be toggled between full-step and half-step operation to balance positioning granularity and top speed. Home, external limit, and hardware stop inputs are wired to dedicated terminals, and the drive uses TTL ground-seeking logic for all command lines.
The aluminum case measures 152.4 mm wide, 104.9 mm tall, and only 28.6 mm deep, so multiple axes can be lined up on a shallow backplate. Four #6-32 mounting inserts are pressed into the housing for rigid fastening. The open-collector output drivers provide three 500 mA outputs and one 750 mA output, allowing direct actuation of relays or solenoid valves without additional buffers. A four-pin motor connector delivers phased power, while a three-pin header accepts the DC supply. The drive also has a four-pin I/O header and clearly marked limit inputs, which simplify wiring on multi-axis machines.
